Overview
The Scrum Master II provides servant-leadership and mentorship to multiple cross-functional Agile teams through the effective application of Agile principles and frameworks, including Scrum, Kanban, and Extreme Programming (XP). This role fosters continuous improvement by strengthening the understanding of effective practices, theories, and techniques. The Scrum Master II educates and coaches teams to create an environment that promotes self-organization, cross-functionality, collaboration, conflict resolution, transparency, and continuous improvement. Additionally, they visualize, communicate, and radiate team information to keep their work and impediments visible to stakeholders.
Primary Responsibilities
Utilize a broad knowledge base of Agile practices, including user stories, retrospectives, story mapping, Acceptance Test-Driven Development (ATDD), Test-Driven Development (TDD), continuous integration, pairing, and information radiators, to help create high-performing teams.
Encourage a culture of continuous improvement within Agile teams by fostering transparency, collaboration, and regular retrospectives.
Curate and deliver team-level coaching content to guide teams on Agile best practices.
Facilitate Agile ceremonies, including sprint planning, daily stand-ups, backlog refinement, sprint reviews, retrospectives, problem-solving sessions, and alignment meetings.
Enhance team workflow visibility using appropriate information radiators.
Address and escalate blocking issues that are beyond the team's authority, ensuring they remain focused on achieving their goals.
Collaborate with other Agile leaders to enhance Agile adoption within the organization.
Provide mentorship and coaching to less experienced Scrum Masters.
Seek and promote individual and team learning opportunities, including participation in communities of practice, conferences, meetups, reading, and classroom training.
Ensure adherence to the company's risk and regulatory standards, policies, and controls. Identify risk-related issues requiring escalation to management.
Design, implement, maintain, and enhance internal controls to mitigate risk.
Promote an inclusive and diverse work environment that aligns with the M&T Bank brand.
Maintain compliance with internal control standards, including timely resolution of audit points raised by internal and external regulators.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
Scope of Responsibilities
The Scrum Master II is responsible for leading multiple Agile teams, fostering an environment of collaboration and continuous improvement. They work closely with stakeholders, product owners, and team members to ensure the effective implementation of Agile practices.
Supervisory/Managerial Responsibilities
While this role does not include direct management responsibilities, it requires managing activities through influence, accountability, and ownership in an Agile environment.
Education and Experience Required
Bachelor's degree and a minimum of 4 years of experience as a member of an Agile team, including at least 2 years of Scrum Master experience.
In lieu of a degree, a combined minimum of 8 years of higher education and/or work experience, including 4 years as a member of an Agile team and at least 2 years as a Scrum Master.
Strong knowledge of the banking industry.
Experience working in a Scaled Agile Environment.
Proficiency in Jira, Power BI, and other Agile tools.
Education and Experience Preferred
In-depth knowledge of at least two technology team roles, such as project management, user experience, business analysis, development, testing, or deployment.
Prior experience fostering team self-organization and continuous improvement.
Strong knowledge of Agile and Lean principles and practices.
Experience developing or managing digital capabilities.
Understanding of Design Thinking principles.
Strong verbal and written communication skills.
Proven experience leading through influence.
Excellent verbal and written English communication skills and the ability to interact professionally with a diverse group are required.
