Position Overview: Darrow School is seeking an energetic and detail-oriented
Music Director to oversee and further develop the School’s music program. The Music Director is responsible for developing students\' knowledge, skills, and talents in music performance by utilizing a range of instructional techniques tailored to their interests and abilities. The role includes building creative programs within budgetary constraints and forging professional relationships with local musicians for collaborative opportunities. This is a full-time, 10-month position with both instrumental and choral direction responsibilities.
Specific Duties Include: - Demonstrate mastery of subject matter, instructional skills, and resource materials
- Plan and teach a variety of music courses aligned with Darrow’s mission and curriculum philosophy
- Promote and direct the School’s music performance ensembles: The Darrow Music Collective (DMC), Jazz Ensemble, and Chorus
- Coordinate student collaborations with professional musicians for projects and performances
- Accompany bands and chorus during musical performances
- Plan, rehearse, and direct student showcases annually
- Manage the Performing Arts Center, including all materials and digital recording studio
- Maintain and support all musical and audio equipment on campus
- Support the Signature Program in Musicianship and Performance
- Participate in multidisciplinary coursework and off-campus learning experiences for students
- Work closely with admissions for recruitment and retention of performing arts students
General Faculty Responsibilities: - Residential duty one night per week and approximately one weekend every four weeks
- Serve as advisor to a small group of students
- Facilitate approximately 7 student activities per year
- Provide continual assessment and regular progress reports
- Participate in parent-teacher-student conferences
- Collaborate with the Learning Skills program to differentiate instruction
- Attend weekly faculty meetings and in-service sessions
- Engage in professional growth opportunities
- Other duties as assigned
Requirements: Required Skills/Qualifications: - Bachelor’s degree in Music or related discipline required; state teaching certification not required
- Teaching experience strongly preferred
- Proven ability to build strong relationships with students and colleagues, with a mindset of unconditional positive regard
- Demonstrated growth mindset and belief in the ability of all students to learn
- Innovative and creative educational approach
- Preferably experience with inclusive, differentiated instructional practices for varying learning needs
- Ability to understand developmental and emotional needs of students
- Commitment to fostering an inclusive, diverse community
- Desire to contribute to all aspects of boarding school life, including athletics, extracurricular programs, and residential responsibilities
Physical Requirements: - Regularly required to talk, hear, sit, stand, walk, use hands, and reach with arms
- Frequently lift and/or move objects up to 20 pounds; may occasionally lift objects greater than 20 pounds
- Able to work in various outdoor and indoor conditions, including heat, cold, dust, and noise
- Requires extensive walking, climbing stairs, driving, and ability to bend, reach, stoop, and stand for extended periods
