This position maintains and installs heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning equipment in all buildings on the campus of the South Dakota State Penitentiary. The position keeps all systems and components in good operating condition; performs necessary repairs and preventative maintenance; and supervises and participates in the planning, altering, and installing of new systems. This position is the lead specialist for HVAC on a Maintenance staff of 14 employees at the Penitentiary.

Successful applicant(s) will be required to undergo a background investigation. An arrest/conviction record will not necessarily bar employment. Offers of employment are conditional upon successful completion of a drug screening.

Licenses and Certifications:

HVAC refrigeration certificate is preferred.
The State of South Dakota EPA requires Section 608 Certification in order to work with refrigerants.

Incumbent must be willing and able to report to work for inclement weather conditions and other highway emergencies; and must be able to report to their home station within 30 minutes, under normal driving conditions, from the time of notification.

The Ideal Candidate Will Have:

The position requires vocational training or significant experience in the HVAC field. Certification in HVAC is preferred but not required.

Knowledge of:

  • local, state, and federal building codes;
  • appropriate installation and repair techniques;
  • electrical and mechanical engineering and design;
  • the functions of various electrical, HVAC and plumbing systems.

Ability to:

  • read and follow blueprints;
  • interpret technical specifications and regulations;
  • operate the necessary tools of the trade;
  • supervise;
  • communicate information clearly and concisely;
  • deal tactfully and work effectively with others.
